Part 3 – Managing Startup Programs

In this video you will learn how to control how many programs start up automatically when Windows starts up. Of all the videos you’re getting in this series, this on is probably the most valuable in terms of speeding up your computer.
Between this video and the last one you watched, these can make a difference of minutes when it comes to starting up your computer. They can also take your computer from feeling like it’s old and sluggish, to feeling like it’s brand-new, speedy, and lots of fun again!
Incidentally, although the video starts out by saying it’s for Windows 7, it’s exactly the same for Windows XP and Windows Vista. The only difference is that you type “MSConfig” in the search bar for Windows XP and follow the instructions exactly for Vista or 7. MSConfig will work for all versions, but “Config.sys” will only work for Vista and 7. If you don’t understand this now, you will after you watch the video. You’ll be able to do what the video talks about regardless of which version you have.

Thanks for the video this is a great reminder and is something I need to do as my computer is really slow at bootup. Also I have XP and found that I had to run MSConfig instead of config.sys.
Hello Kim, Thanks for this comment! I will add this to the video page. Both commands do the same things in Windows 7 and Vista, but MSConfig is the command for Windows XP.
Question for you when I booted up this morning after making changes the System Configuration Utility came up. I need to click on one of the following which should I choose or should I just choose cancel? If I choose cancel will it put the original settings back?
Normal Startup – load all device drivers and services
Diagnostic Startup – load basic devices and services only
Selective Startup
Hi Kim, It’s normal for the system configuration to come up after changes are made. Just click cancel. The changes you made will remain in effect and will not revert to the way they were before.
